Inter-collegiate cultural contests, MU to initiate

Mangaluru, July 18,2017: Briefing reporters here on Monday, Mangalore University Directorate of Students Welfare director Prof Barkur Uday stated that Mangalore University will organise inter-collegiate cultural competitions for students studying in its affiliated and constituent colleges next month, August.

He mentioned that the competitions will be held in five categories—literature, fine arts, music, theatre and dance.

Venues : The competitions will be hosted by Rosario College, Mangaluru (literary events on August 17); SDM College, Ujire (fine arts on August 19); St Philomena College, Puttur (music on August 22, 23); Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala (theatre, August 28, 29) and Alva’s College, Moodbidri (dance, August 30, 31). The winners from all the disciplines will be selected for South Zone Youth Festival which will be held in October-November. The winners at the South Zone Youth Festival will take part in the national-level cultural competitions.

In 2016-17, Alva’s College had emerged overall champions followed by SDM College, Ujire (runner-up) and Dr BB Hegde First Grade College, Kundapura and Canara College, Mangaluru (second runner-up). The winners were awarded Rs 50,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.

“A large number of students must take active part in cultural competitions. At least 50 to 60 colleges will take part in each category. The students from all the 220 affiliated colleges from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts are eligible to take part in the contest,” Prof Uday said.

In music category, competitions—Classical vocal solo (Hindustani or Carnatic), classical instrumental solo (percussion), classical instrumental solo (non-percussion), light vocal (Indian), Western vocal (solo), group song (Indian), group song (Western), folk orchestra will be held.

In Dance category, competitions such as folk/tribal dance and classical dance will be held. Quiz, elocution, debates in Kannada and English will be held under Literary events’ category.

In theatre, competitions—one-act play, skits, mime and mimicry will be held. In fine arts category events such as on-the-spot painting, collage, poster-making, clay modeling, cartooning and others will be held. A sum of Rs 4,55,623 will be spent on organising these cultural competitions, he said.
