Inclusion of sub-castes in census - Christians demand

Mangaluru, April 2, 2015:  Forum of Christian United Services (Focus) has sought inclusion of two sub-castes Roman Catholic and Protestants in the list of sub-castes under ’Christian’  in the caste census. In a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner, to be submitted to Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, Focus said in the format of caste census, 50 sub-castes have been mentioned under the caste Christian.

Though sub-castes such as ’Adi Andhra Christian’, ’Akkasaliga Christian’, ’Banjara Christian’, ’Besta Christian’, ’Billava Christian’ and ’Syrian Christian’ have been mentioned, major sub castes Roman Catholic and Protestant have not been mentioned.  The memorandum claimed that the two sub-castes will deprive the people belonging to these two sub-castes, from government facilities meant for them. Roman Catholics and Protestants will face difficulties in availing the benefits.  More over these two are the in majority and are the important groups at present.
