I-Day Cup football tourney from July 30 - DKDFA

Mangalore, July 27, 2014: Addressing the media,  Dakshina Kannada District Football Association, affiliated to Karnataka State Football Association, will organise the 18th edition of Independence Cup Football Tournament, at Nehru Maidan football ground in Mangalore, from July 30. Mayor Mahabala Marla will inaugurate the tourney, stated Association President D M Aslam.

  He said that in the 17-day tournament, competitions will be held in seven categories like primary school boys and girls, high school boys and girls, PUC boys, and for degree college boys and girls. The final matches of high school, PUC and degree college category will be held on August 15, in the presence of at least 10,000 spectators. Attractive trophy and cash awards will be given to the winners during the valedictory, he said.

Aslam, DKDFA President, said youth are being attracted towards football increasingly. In the 17th edition of the tournament, 194 teams participated, for coming tournament, already 212 teams have registered their names. There is great opportunity for India to become a football playing nation, he said. Aslam reminded the government about the long-pending demand about an exclusive football arena in Nehru Maidan. We are fortunate that a century ago this maidan was gifted by a football loving local person specially for football.

KSFA Member Vijaya Suvarna said that Dakshina Kannada football team is number one in the State. DKDFA team won the State-level inter-district football championship 2014 held at Shimoga, recently. Two players represented State men’s team and two in the women’s team from DK, he said.

Programme  :  Matches will be held for higher primary school boys and girls, high school girls and college girls, on July 30 and 31. Matches for high school boys will commence from August 1. PU and degree college matches will follow.
