Government schemes have not been implemented: Kateel

Mangalore, Jan 21: Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who recently chaired a meeting of various departments including the Rural Development Department, expressed concern over the fact that several highly beneficial government schemes have not been implemented in DK. 

Mr. Kateel said that a number of programmes related to housing, sanitation, employment, power, and so on have not been implemented in DK district, owing to which the entire district was losing its reputation. He requested the officials concerned to implement these central government programmes at the earliest possible.

He also said that DK was the last district to implement the NREGA programme. All the NREGA funds have been spent in the Horticulture Department. Bantwal alone has spent the lion’s share of the fund; and other taluks have not shown much interest in implementing NREGA. He also informed that DK has not successfully implemented the Indira Awas Yojana. As per this scheme, 1,526 houses had been sanctioned in 2009; but DK had completed only 475 houses.

Kateel also expressed his dissatisfaction over the non implementation of the Gram Sadak Yojana. As per this programme, 36 news roads have to be constructed in the district. Unfortunately, the programme has not yet been implemented. The officials concerned said that Rs 1.02 crore was spent in constructing a stretch of road, 2.73 kms long, from Kana Village to Thokur within land sanctioned to SEZ. 

Mr. Kateel said that, one day, the people would question the officials about the non implementation of these programmes. 

T J Takatrao, the chief planning officer, said that all the 203 Gram Panchayats of this district were eligible to receive the Nirmal Gram Award. On Jan 28, 23 Gram Panchayats in DK will receive the award. 

Mr. Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, the president of the ZP, was also present for the meeting.
