Mangaluru, April 25, 2015 : A police team from Mangaluru South police raided a godown of a firm in Kanara Chambers Road in Bunder on Thursday and recovered 71 rice bags, each weighing 50 kg, meant to be distributed under the public distribution system.

According to a press note, the team led by Mangaluru South Police Sub Inspector Mohammed Sharief visited the godown of Prasad Trading Company after being tipped off about the transportation of rice bags meant to be distributed in ration shops.

The police said they found 67 rice bags stocked in the godown while four bags were found in a lorry parked outside. The firm’s owner Devadas Bhat reportedly confessed to purchasing the rice from a person in Shivamogga and his intention to sell it at a higher rate in the market.

The police arrested Bhat on the charge of cheating under the Indian Penal Code and under the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act.
