Mangalore Today News Network

Mulki, Jan 7: Mitra Heraje, the superintendent of police who manages the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE), and P A Ganapathi, the district social welfare officer, visited a hostel run by the Social Welfare Department for SC, ST, and OBC students at Karnad, close to Mulky.

They found the hostel shining with cleanliness. However, a Std VIII student informed press people that the superintendent of the hostel had ordered the boys to clean everything because there would be an inspection later than day. Some hostel cooks and senior students tried to shut him up, but restrained themselves when they realized that their actions were being captured TV cameras.

Padmavathi, the superintendent of the hostel, informed the officers that the hostel served eggs thrice weekly, bananas twice weekly, chicken twice or thrice monthly, sardines thrice monthly, and mackerels once monthly.

But the students said that eggs were served only twice weekly and bananas once weekly. Besides, they had not tasted chicken for more than one month. Mackerels were last served during October, they said.

The students informed journalists that there was often no food at the hostel. Since the senior students were served first, the younger children hardly received anything. Besides, Srinivas Devadiga, the hostel cook, surreptitiously sold sugar and rice to outsiders and carried home large quantities of delicious dishes.

A student said that they had complained to Ms Padmavathi several times. When Ms Padmavathi was questioned about it, she said that she had informed Mr. Ganapathi. And when Ganapathi was questioned, he had nothing to say.
