First batch of overseas students register at Mangalore University for PhD programmes

Mangalore, Oct 30,2014: : A batch of seven students from African countries arrived Mangalore University campus at Mangalagangothri, on October 29, Wednesday evening, to pursue their PhD programmes, this is staed to be the first batch.

For the first time many foreign students will be studying at the 34-year-old university. In  the past, only one foreign student had pursued PhD programme here.  Mangalore today had reported that the academic council of Mangalore University on September 27, had approved intake of foreign students for PhD and post-graduate programmes offered by the university.

Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya informs that a few more students will arrive in a day or two and added that though the university had intended to open up PG courses for the foreign students, the foreign national students may not take up the PG courses as the semester classes have already begun at the university  The university has already indicated the course available to the students based on their preferences and assigned either the nearest or equivalent course of their choice for PhD programmes. A total of 34 foreign students had shown interest to pursue post graduation / research (PhD) in Mangalore University after the university set up International Student Centre recently. Out of the 34 applications received, 28 were for pursuing PhD degree and the remaining for post-graduate courses in various faculty of the university.

The Registrar also said that the Nethravathi guest house of the university will be a temporary hostel for the students. A cook has already been appointed to cook food for them. Dining hall has also been arranged for the students. Indian food according to the students wish will be served to them. Preference will also be given to serve non-vegetarian food, he added.

After the university set up its International Student centre, ateam of two professors— Prof Ravishankar Rao and Prof A M Khan visited New Delhi to project the strength of the Mangalore University to attract foreign students. Following which, students had applied through Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), which offers fellowships to foreign students to study in Indian universities. The students who have shown interest in pursuing their stidies are from Egypt, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Madagascar, Rwanda, Eretria and Namibia, in the first instance.
