Family Sells Babies in Puttur

Family Sells Babies in Puttur

Mangalore Today News Network

Puttur, Nov 3: Saraswathi (20), resident of Kabaka in Puttur and unmarried daughter of Sesappa Baira,  a retired railway gate keeper, gave birth to a baby girl at the government hospital in Puttur on Aug 30, 2009 and complained that the child has been kidnapped.

The young mother, who works for daily wages, claims that the baby’s father is coworker Vasanth. She later complained that someone kidnapped her baby on the very day she gave birth to it at the government hospital on August 30.

However, Saraswathi’s words are difficult to believe because witnesses state that she was discharged from the hospital 10 days after she gained admittance and that she had taken the baby with her. Later, she had visited her elder sister’s house in Batwal along with the baby and her mother. She returned without the baby and lodged her complaint. The issue was even discussed during the Village Panchayat meeting.

Investigations revealed shocking facts about the case. Sarawathi has 4 brothers and 7 sisters. Five of these sisters are married. The entire family is involved in selling babies. Her elder sisters had also given birth to babies before marriage and sold them to others. Her brother also sold a baby he had fathered.

The Women and Child Development Department is strangely silent. A worker of the department had taken special care of Saraswathi by taking her to the doctor and providing her with nutritious food during her pregnancy. However, the department failed to take any action when she began claiming that her baby was missing. They did not even lodge a complaint at the local police station.
