Elections to be held to 26 ZP seats and 98 TP seats in Udupi

Udupi, Feb 01, 2016: All arrangements are being made for the smooth conduct of the forthcoming elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats in Udupi district on Saturday.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal said that elections would be held to 26 seats in Udupi Zilla Panchayat and 98 seats in three taluk panchayats. There are 7,88,173 voters in the district including 4,11,024 women, 3,77,128 men and 21 third gender.

The nomination papers for the elections would be accepted from February 1. The last date for filing nomination papers is February 8. The scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on February 9.

The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is February 11.

Polling will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on February 20. Repolling, if necessary, would be held on February 22. The counting of votes would be held at the respective taluk headquarters from 8 a.m. onwards on February 23.

The three mustering and de-mustering centres in the district are St. Cecily’s School, Udupi; Bhandarkars College, Kundapur; and Government Manjunath Pai Memorial First Grade College, Karkala.

Weekly markets

On account of the elections, the weekly markets at Halady in Kundapur taluk; Cherkady, Pilar, Santur, Yenagudde and Hirebettu in Udupi taluk; and Mudrady in Karkala taluk would be closed.

Arms licence holders (barring those on government and security duties) had already been directed to deposit their arms with the nearest police station.

Sale of alcoholic beverages had been banned from midnight of February 18 to midnight of February 20, and from midnight of February 22 to midnight of February 23.

Employees who were given election duties could cast their votes through postal ballots.

Since the Electronic Voting Machines were being used for the polls, there was provision for None of the Above option for the voters, the release added.
