Early exams, holidays... at Manipal varsity due to water shortage

Mangalore Today News Network

Manipal : Reports indicate that due to water scarcity, Manipal University has taken a decision to wrap up semesters early and conduct examinations much earlier than the previous years.  Twenty-two institutes, under the university will come under this scheme. More than 30,000 students, 2,500 faculties and 72,000 non-teaching staffers are studying and working at different levels. The university has also a full-fledged hospital.

Registrar Dr Narayan Sabhahit said that the semester is shortened for all other institutions, except KMC as it is under Medical Council of India and the university does not interfere in terms of the examination schedule or the duration of the semesters.

The semester exams have already started in all the institutions and they will be over by May first week. The vacation will extend till June unlike the previous years wherein the institutions started the academic year in the third week of July. This year, the semester will begin much early, he added.

CMC executive engineer Ganesh said generally the university receives 5.50 MLD water and it has been decreased to 2.50 MLD from February. The university pays around 25 lakh water bill every month and water is supplied on rationing basis, he explained.

The awareness programmes on limited use of water on the campus through pamphlets and hoardings have been held. The concept of recycle and reuse method, adopted by the university much earlier, has been intensified.

The registrar said water consumption is more at MIT, the largest institution under the university (up to 2.5 to 3 MLD). Completing the examinations early and closing the institution for vacation will help the university to use the water for hospital and medical college. "We are also procuring water through tankers by paying high prices to meet the demand," Sabhahit said.
