Domestic cargo terminal awaiting nod

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 6, 2015 : A full-fledged domestic air cargo handling facility at Mangaluru International Airport is awaiting green signal from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for commissioning.

The facility close to the terminal building was expected to go operational from last month but has been delayed. J.T. Radhakrishna, director of the airport told The Hindu that BCAS officials inspected the facility for two days on April 24 and 25. The airport managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is awaiting BCAS approval.

A private company, Cargo Service Centre India Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, has bagged the contract of managing the facility for five years from May 6. The facility had x-ray machine, explosive-detection devices, closed circuit television camera facility and cubicles for keeping cargo. Explosive detection devices were required to ensure that cargo did not have explosive materials. At present, domestic cargo being handled at the airport terminal building at Kenjar by the AAI consist of parcels and postal articles only. Passenger flights carried them as belly-load cargo. Passenger flights could carry only a limited quantity of cargo and they could not carry all kinds of cargo.

The full-fledged domestic air cargo handling facility has been set up in Dakkan Park building, a private building which was handed over to the AAI by the State government, last year.

TruJet, a regional airline based in Hyderabad, has shown interest to operate between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, according to J.T. Radhakrishna, director, Mangaluru International Airport.

He told The Hindu that the airport has allotted the airline space in the terminal building to start operations. It has plans to operate an ATR aircraft having 72 seats. It is not sure from when the airline would operate.
