District aims for fifth place in SSLC exams this year

Mangaluru, Feb 28, 2015 : Teachers and Education Department officials are hard at work to ensure that 80 per cent of the students who would appear for the class 10 examination beginning March 30, emerge successful. The district aims to secure the fifth place in the overall performance of students in the State, said Deputy Director of Public Instruction Walter D’Mello.

In a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim here on Thursday, Mr. D’Mello said that Block Education Officers (BEO) were working with teachers in preparing students, especially the slow learners. Special training sessions were being conducted to prepare slow-learning students for securing 60 marks. “We are making sure that these slow learners are confident in getting more than the minimum marks required to clear each subject,” he said.

The BEO from Bantwal – the block that fared poorly with a pass percentage of 76 per cent – said they were working with slow learners since December. Question bank prepared by a group of teachers was being using to prepare these students to get at least 60 marks.

Mangalore South block BEO said they were preparing students to draw figures for some questions so that they would get one or two marks.

The BEOs from Sullia and Puttur said some of the schools in their blocks had started conducting night classes for boys. Some schools were conducting classes for those needing additional attention on weekends. Parents of the children were counselled before conducting the night classes, Mr. D’Mello said.

Mr. Ibrahim said care should be taken that there was no discrimination among students in awarding 20 internal assessment marks to each student. He asked Mr. D’Mello to conduct radio talks and also publish important questions and answers in some newspapers in the next few weeks.
