Dialysis kits restrictions, patients in distress

Mangaluru, July 25, 2016:  The Peritoneal Dialysis Centre, which was opened at the Government Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru, in March 2014, is now seeking government funds to extend its benefits to needy patients. Then minister UT Khader had inaugurated these centres here and at KC General Hospital, Bengaluru. Twenty kidney patients were given peritoneal dialysis kits in Mangaluru and these allow patients to undergo dialysis on their own thrice a day.


The scheme, which was introduced on a pilot basis, has not been extended to more patients though they’re waiting for it.  Jayarama, the relative of a patient from Ullal, said Wenlock Hospital refused to provide the kit. "My relative, who is suffering from a kidney disease, has not been given the peritoneal dialysis kit. The government should provide it to patients unable to visit hospitals regularly. There are many bedridden patients in rural areas of Dakshina Kannada who should be provided these kits. It helps patients undergo dialysis at home instead of going to hospital regularly for hemodialysis," he added.   Wenlock Hospital superintendent and district surgeon Dr H R Rajeshwari Devi said the scheme was limited to only 20 patients, at present.
