Ujire, Feb 06, 2016: Speaking at the inaugural function of a national-level seminar on ’The Political Leadership of Women in Karnataka’ organised by the Department of Political Science of SDM College, Ujire, in association with Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Programme (SKDRP) in Ujire on Friday, Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson Manjula Manasa said women should be given equal opportunities for leadership in both houses as well as in the society.

She said, "All women are not good and all men are not bad either. In today’s situation, women have been neglecting their health and are living in a fearful atmosphere. Sexual harassment on elderly women and girl children is inhuman."

Manjula said, "Even though several women are being elected in elections, the power will be vested in the hands of their husbands. Women are looked at as inferiors in the society and their good qualities misused. Most women are not aware of the existence of Women’s Commission."

She said, "Many government officials have not attended this programme. The model code of conduct of zilla and taluk panchayat elections do not prohibit the government officials from taking part in public functions."

She said a workshop on women empowerment will be conducted in Dharmasthala for government officials. The deputy commissioner has given consent for the programme, she added.   She called upon women to develop leadership qualities and enter politics to serve the less privileged.

Inaugurating the seminar, SDM Educational Society Secretary Dr B Yashoverma said women should shed inferiority complex and should be self-reliant.

Presiding over the programme, SDM Educational Society Vice President Prof S Prabhakar said men and women have equal rights and duties. There should be no gender differences in and out of their houses, he added.

College Principal Prof K S Mohananarayana, Seminar Organising Secretary Dr Shalip and others attended.
