Dalit grievance meet

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 29, 2014 :  Speaking at the SC/ST monthly grievances meeting, at Police Commissioner’s office here, on July 27,  City Police Commissioner R Hithendra has said that cases pertaining to land disputes should be dealt by the revenue or forest department rather than the police department.

Dalit leaders demanded the Commissioner to inform the outcome of the meeting to the Assistant Commissioners and demanded that the AC should convene SC/ST grievances meeting once in a month in his office to solve row over land.  A Dalit representative claimed that she was harassed by Ullal police officers, who were trying to evict an elderly woman at Permanur. However, another group objected, and said that the woman was residing on the land that was earmarked for the SC/STs. “The panchayat had ordered to clear the land. It is unfortunate that a few Dalit groups are supporting encroachment of this land,” claimed one group.

Dalit leader S P Anand also complained of a fake astrologer cheating a person. Though a case has been filed under Prevention of Dalit Atrocity Act, no action has been initiated.

Dalita Sangarsha Samiti (Ambedkar vada) Taluk Convenor Ishu Kumar alleged that some senior officials in the mobile forest squad were exploiting a subordinate Narayana, a Dalit. The senior officials have abused him. Narayana was being asked to perform household chores at the houses of his seniors. “If he did not adhere with their instructions, they have threatened of transferring him,” he said.

Sumitra Umesh, a resident of Konaje who has been frequently complaining against her neighbours of harassing her, accused the police of sending wrong water sample for testing in the case of an attempt to poison the water tank at her house. She even threatened of hunger strike if the police fail to support her. The Commissioner promised that the DCP will visit the house to look into the case.  ACP Dr K V Jagadish and DCP N Vishnuvardhana were present.
