Mangalore, Sep 3, 2014: Delivering a speech at Dakshina Kannada district private PU College Principals meet at Rosario Cultural Hall in Mangalore on Sept 2.   Mangalore University Student Welfare Officer and Political Science department Professor P L Dharma  stated that the link between Pre-University and higher education is lost,   the PU college lecturers are marginalised and placed on a second rung, though are the key players in performing actively a great responsibility to shape youth in the crucial formative age.

Prof Dharma lamented that humanities subjects have been neglected in PU level and eight PU colleges have stopped admitting students for Arts subjects, due to lack of students. This is because of the false prestige of parents towards commerce and science subjects, he said.

PU lecturers produce good human beings rather than professionals, he said and added it was not a right attitude to measure the quality of education through numbers.

In his inaugural address, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik said that permanent posting for the post of lecturers in aided colleges is likely to happen and approval from finance department is awaited.  He urged the government to permit the colleges to make postings, in accordance with the regulations of PU education department towards the vacancies due to retirement, death and so on.  Karnik meanwhile lamented that education has been commercialised and children are being pressurised by parents against the interests of children. He assured of placing issues bothering private PU colleges in the Legislative Council session, to arrive at amicable solutions.

MLA J R Lobo who presided over the function said that universities have failed to improve the level of education even after UGC scale was set by the government. Pointing at the problems of the existing pattern of education, MLA Lobo felt that a wider consultation towards policy decisions is needed so as to rectify the problems of PU lecturers.

Representatives from various PU colleges of the district put forward various problems such as withdrawal of maintenance grants, dearth of non-teaching staff and problems in the recruitment of teaching staff, problem regarding arrears, separation of PU colleges from First grade colleges etc. A memorandum was submitted to the MLC on the same.

District PU Education department Deputy Director R K Thimmaiah was present among a well attended gathering.
