Oct 25, 2016 Addressing media in Mangaluru, All India Grameen Dak Sevak Union advisor B S Chandru said that Dak Sevaks (Rural postal distribution staff) will strike work on October 25 and 26 to press for their demands, including salary hike and other benefits.  A protest meet will be held in front of the Divisional Post office at Balmatta.

The rural postal distribution staff are paid a meagre monthly salary of Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 and their services are not considered as permanent. The salary of the permanent employees of the department has been hiked several times. There are three lakh grameen dak sevaks in the country, including 30,000 in the state and 251 in Mangaluru, he added.

Chandru urged the government to regularise the services of grameen dak sevaks, pay the arrears and also provide Earned Leave, Casual Leave, HRA and TA facilities, along with other benefits enjoyed by the permanent employees of the department. Karnataka Rajya Raita Andolana Samiti, Prajavikasa Trust and other organisations have supported the protest, he added.

Union president Rajaram Churya, zonal secretary Gangadhara Pacchanady, treasurer Radhakrishna Padil and member Harishwar Rao were present at the press meet.
