Daily wager’s daughter aspires to IIT-Bombay after cracking JEE exam

Udupi, July 26, 2014:  S Akshatha’s interest in studies since childhood has stood her in good stead. She secured the 203rd rank in the advance exam May 2014.  It has been widely reported that Akshatah, the daughter of a simple daily wage earner in Karkala has cracked IIT-JEE,  the highly competitive engineering exam.  She’s the daughter of Sudhakar Naik and Saraswathi, a scheduled tribe family from Kukkuje.

 Akshatha will join  B.Tech (aerospace engineering) at IIT-Bombay. After studying in her village school till Class 5, she joined the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Hebri, and did the SSLC.  She passed out with CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 9.8 out of 10 in SSLC. Akshatha, then, did PUC (PCMB) in Bangalore. With an eye on the IIT, she enrolled for free coaching classes conducted by the Dakshana Foundation.

Akshatha unassumingly said, "I want to join the Indian Space Research Organisation. I’m grateful to my family and teachers. I was always interested in mathematics in primary and high school and happy to be studying in IIT-Bombay. My hard work has paid off."

Her mother Saraswathi S, an anganwadi worker, says she wanted her daughter to reach greater heights. "It was through her efforts that she gained entry into the IIT. My son, Dhanraj S, has done his BE and is looking for a job. Akshatha has made us proud.’’ She added that poverty never came in the way of the family giving the children a good education. Will the concerned see that jobs and support will not lack for this humble but good family.
