Mangalore, Oct 10, 2015 : Reports are rife that Dakshina Kannada district police has tightened action on traffic violations. The fact that the police unit collected Rs 64.14 lakh as fine in 27,623 cases in the first eight months of this year as against Rs 60.59 lakh from 32,260 cases in 2015 and Rs 59.01 lakh from 35,821 cases in 2013.  With 3 more months left in the calendar year, the fines collected could reach an all-time high, said SP Sharanappa SD.

Collecting fines is not the only aim of the DK police, SP Sharanappa stated,  primary aim is to ensure that motorists adhere to the rules in their own interest. Imposing fine and depositing it in the government account is not vital the long-term aim is to encourage people to adhere to road safety rules.

This voluntary drive will help put breaks on lots of accidents, which result from negligence on roads.

To ensure that the policemen in charge of traffic discharge their duties effectively, Sharanappa said grants provided to reduce accidents, reflective jackets, reflective gloves, traffic batons have been procured through e-tender and supplied to all police stations. Personnel in charge of traffic management have been directed to use the protective equipment.  Police personnel who man traffic too are vulnerable to accidents and their safety is also important.

Steps have also been taken to identify accident-prone spots and erect cautionary sign boards, reflective cat-eyes and solar equipment in such areas. Police have also been instructed to crack down on those indulging in drunk driving or using mobile phones while driving.

Police is also spreading the message among motorists through events, such as road safety week. The first focus is on students to spread awareness.
