Udupi, July 15,2017: A man was ordered by the assistant commissioner to take care of his parents who were forced to stay away from his house. The son had harassed them to vacate the house, in which they lived, on the pretext of renovation—build a separate room for them with all the facilities, so that they can live comfortably.
The senior citizen couple, aged 76 and 69 years, approached the senior citizen helpline 1090, for help. The helpline’s social workers visited the house and found that the house in a good condition and felt that it does not need renovation or reconstruction. The visiting social workers clicked photographss and submitted a report to the assistant commissioner, Department of Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, concerned police officer and to the DK DC.
After seeing the report and photographs, the assistant commissioner himself visited the spot. Satisfied with the report, he permitted the parents to continue to live in the same house. He directed that there should be no renovation or reconstruction unless the parents ask for it.
Senior citizens, in case of any problems, may contact the toll-free number 1090—set up on the premises of the Mangaluru south police station at Pandeshwar, this is a standing facility.
The helpline was started in the country in 2005, with the assistance and inputs of many social minded persons now forgotten. The helpline provides directions, advice and guides the elderly with procedures for obtaining benefits like old age pension, widow pension, senior citizen card, Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter’s identity cards and such necessary documents. The local administration and many support this service.
