Udupi, Aug 27, 2015 :  Speaking at an  inaugural of ’Makkala Nataka Sahitya Gosti,’ organised by Karnataka Sahitya Academy in association with Rangabhoomi, Udupi, the limerick writer said today’s generation had no dearth of facilities and luxuries, however, they were culturally poor without the knowledge of art and culture.

He blamed electronic media for the position among children towards the cultural aspects. The writer added that the media should be blamed for keeping children in dark over culture and exposure to alien subject matters. He said that children should develop interest in the art and culture from a young age. Today’s littérateurs were all readers and writers earlier.

Stating that there is a shortage of books on children’s literature, Dundiraj added that the writers do not want to recognise themselves as writers of children’s literature. Hence, the writers in the past never engaged themselves in the field of children’s literature. The writers suffered inferiority complex in identifying themselves as the authors for children’s books. Subsequently, lack of interest and materials have resulted in the scarcity of well written children plays. He urged the writers to come up with good  children’s plays and books.

Veteran writer Prof Udyavara Madhav Acharya said the one cultural tragedy at present was children were not exposed to language. Children are blind towards the enthusiasm discovered through observing and reading. Children should make use of the available opportunities to involve themselves in writing.
