Mangalore, Nov 30: T M Shahid Thekkil, the congress leader and Coir Board member, said that the state government must take the required steps to protect the interests of people who are severely affected by the Dubai economic recession. 

He said that the nation earns an income of Rs 75,000 crores from the gulf countries, of which Karnataka and Kerala alone contribute an 80 percent share. 

He wrote a letter to Yedyurappa, in which he mentions that the Dubai recession will affect people living in the coastal districts. He requested the government to create an NRI welfare fund for the benefit of these people. He has also included many more demands in his appeal.
