Chemical waste kills large number of fish in Malpe

Chemical waste kills large number of fish in Malpe

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Jan 5: The stretch of ocean from Udyavar to Malpe has witnessed the death of fish in large numbers. This is possibly due to the release of chemical wastes from fish refinement units into the sea water a few days ago. The fishermen who depend on fish for their livelihood are alarmed.

On Jan 3, the Malpe Padukere Environment Safety Forum conducted a meeting at Jnanodaya Bhajana Mandir to discuss the problem. They expressed anger against the officers who failed to take proper action. The fishermen have been urged to find alternative methods of waste water disposal from refinement units.

Vikram Mendon, the president of the committee, said that an intense protest will be staged after Feb 5 if the officers fail to take any action against the disposal of chemical wastes into the sea.

Leaders such as Lakshman Bangera and others were present at the meeting.
