Building jetty at Hosabettu opposed

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, July 14, 2018 : Hosabettu Mogaveera Sangha has opposed the construction of fisheries jetty at Hosabettu area and said that the jetty should be built at the proposed site at Kulai and should not be shifted.

Addressing media in Mangaluru, association President Janardhan said that the project was a long awaited one and governments have been postponing the construction. Initially, the jetty was proposed to be built at Kulai. But now, the location of the jetty is said to be shifted to Hosabettu. Officials have recently conducted the marking of the site in Hosabettu area. The changed location falls under the jurisdiction of Hosabettu Mogaveera Sangha. But the officials of the department concerned have not given any intimation to the people in Hosabettu region or to the Gram Panchayat.

Janardhan further pointed out that MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had hinted about the construction of the jetty in Hosabettu. He said that the fisheries community in the area opposes the plan to shift the jetty. Several families belonging to fisheries community have been dwelling in the region since many generations. The families should not be displaced, he said and urged the concerned authority to provide accurate information on the jetty to the people. The people of the community have opposed the new decision in the local Gram Sabha.

The jetty could be built at Chitrapur in Kulai, as planned earlier, he said.

The MP and the minister concerned should direct the NMPT to construct the jetty at some other location rather than Hosabettu, Janardan said and added that the people have to stage stern protests if the jetty is constructed in Hosabettu.

Association officer bearers Shankar V Salian, Balakrishna and Gangadhar Karkera were present in the press meet.
