Board yet to clear Mangalore Central expansion plans

Board yet to clear Mangalore Central expansion plans

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April 15, 2015 :The much-needed expansion of Mangalore Central Railway Station — to accommodate more trains and augment passenger amenities — is yet to get green signal from the Railway Board.

Important among them is the doubling of the line (about 1 km) between the Central Station and Netravathi cabin, which if done would facilitate faster entry and exit of trains to and from the station. Since Central is a land-locked station, the single line is the lone opening, restricting the number of trains that can be operated from the station.

Waiting for more

Southern Railway’s Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager Anand Prakash told The Hindu that the zonal headquarters at Chennai had forwarded Division’s proposal for doubling in November last itself. The Division is yet to get a go-ahead from the Board for the work, he said.

Similar is the position with other expansion plans for the station, which include construction of a full-fledged second entry from Attavar side and construction of an island platform in addition to the existing three.

Harish Kumar, a resident of Mangaluru, said that it is for the elected representatives, particularly, the Lok Sabha Member, to pursue the matter with the Railway Board. Unless there is political pressure, the Board would not act, he said.
