Beedi workers’ union protests cancellation of DA granted

Beedi workers’ union protests cancellation of DA granted

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Nov 23, 2015 :  Speaking at a protest rally organized before the taluk panchayat on Saturday, CITU leader Vishwanath Rai alleged that State government has snatched the livelihood of the beedi workers.

The Labour Minister Parameshwar Naik is insensitive to the problems of beedi labourers. He ridiculed that the minister is unaware of the Labour Act. He should be removed from the cabinet or should resign from the post. He is unfit to be a labour minister. Implementation of COTPA would be disastrous to the life of the beedi workers as it does not ensure any sort of rehabilitation packages, he said. It would be a blind measure.

The Beedi and Tobacco Labour Union, Udupi district, in association with Malpe Beedi Labourers Association, protested against the cancellation of the dearness allowances to the beedi workers and demanded the resignation of the State Labour minister for his inhuman behaviour.

Vishwanath Rai added the State government should take the delegation comprising of beedi workers to Central government to put pressure for the rehabilitation packages. The decision on stopping the dearness allowance was taken by the government in 2015-16. Rs 12.75 is paid as dearness allowance for 1,000 beedis and a labourer needs at least two days to prepare 1,000 beedis.

He demanded the trilateral committees should be set up at State, district and taluk level. This would enable the legislative privileges to the beedi labourers. He demanded that the labourers who do not have the PF should be ensured with Rs1,000 monthly pension.

Even though the Govt pay commissions had given huge relief to employees and huge  money is expended on gimmicks by the Govt it is inhuman that poor labour without alternate means are persecuted.

He urged that the government should ensure the continuation of the dearness allowance facilities along with the pending amount.

If the government fails to revoke its decision and reconstitute the dearness allowance facilities to the beedi labourers, the left parties and labour organizations would take up protests galore.
