Bantwal violence: 17 accused file bail plea

Bantwal, July 24,2017: While five right-wing members have filed applications before the District Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail, 17 persons, who were arrested following violence in Bantwal on July 8, have filed application seeking bail.

The Fourth Additional District and Sessions Judge Nerale Veerabharaiah Bhavani, who is hearing the applications, has posted anticipatory bail applications and some regular bail applications for orders on July 26.

A few bail applications were posted to July 25 for filing objections.

Following violence during the funeral procession of of RSS volunteer Sharath Madiwala, the Bantwal Town Police registered a case against Bharatiya Janata Party Backward Class Morcha State secretary Sathyajit Surathkal, Bajrang Dal State convener Sharan Pumpwell, Bajrang Dal leader Pradeep Pumpwell, BJP Yuva Morcha Dakshina Kannada district unit president Harish Poonja and Bajrang Dal Dakshina Pranta Goraksha Pramukh Muralikrishna Hasantadka, who were leading the procession.

The police are searching for these accused, who have filed applications seeking anticipatory bail.

On Saturday, prosecutor Harishchandra Udiawar filed a detailed objection opposing anticipatory bail.

Among the contention taken by the prosecutor included violation of the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code by the accused that was in force. The prosecutor said the five were needed for an enquiry with regard to five other cases registered following the violence.

Advocate K. Shambu Sharma, representing the five accused persons, pointed several infirmities in the case registered against his clients.
