Manipal, July 20,2017: Speaking to media, Centre for Creative and Cultural Studies coordinator Dr Unni Krishnan K said  Centre for Creative and Cultural Studies, Manipal University, will organise a national seminar and art exhibition funded by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on ’Indian Art and Art History: Coastal (Karavali) Culture and Art Practices - Ideas, Perspectives and Challenges’ at the Interact Hall, KMC, Manipal University, on July 22 and 23.

Former vice chancellor of Kannada University (Hampi) Prof B A Viveka Rai will inaugurate the programme and deliver the keynote address. KMC dean Prof Poornima Baliga will preside over the inaugural ceremony, he added.

Research papers of interdisciplinary areas of fine arts, Yakshagana, folk art, visual arts, music, dance and art history will presented in the seminar. Scholars Dr Prabhakara Joshi, Prof M L Samaga, Dr Raghava Nambiar (on Yakshagana), Dr Ashok Alva, Dr S A Krishniah, Sharitha Hegde (on Folklore), Bhramari Shivaprakash (on dance), Janardan Rao Havanje (on mural art), Prof Choodamani N, Prof Raghavendra Kulkarni, Prof Ramesh N R, Prof Anil Kumar (on Visual Art and Art History), Dr Ranga Pai and Prof Arvind Hebbar (on Music) will present the papers.

Conference adviser Prof Varadesh Hiregange said perhaps, all cultures need to sit, look at their art forms at different points of history and critically examine the changes taking place in the art forms in particular and broadly in culture itself. The national seminar is structured in such a way that it turns the searchlight on certain art forms which also include arts which are, in a sense, specific to this region, he added.

The aim of the conference is to analyse, debate and research on the Indian Art and Art historical practices with a concern on coastal Karavali culture and art practices. The seminar will reveal the reactions and reflections of Indian artists to their regional concerns. The purpose is to capture the ongoing scenario in the field of art and artists in the backdrop of the coastal life, culture and environment.

As many as 14 papers will be presented on the occasion. It is a tribute to the art, culture and tradition to the coastal region. The senior artists above 70 years of age would present their views on the occasion.
