Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 31, 2014:  T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) in Manipal, opened a state-of-the-art Finance Lab for its students on August 30, the very first of its type. Inaugurating the lab, Bombay Stock Exchange Chief Financial Officer Nayan Mehta said the lab would give a feel and knowledge about the real market, even while students do their education courses.

The Finance Lab with 16 Bloomberg terminals and other tools gives a competitive advantage to TAPMI which will in turn provide a head start to the students. He cautioned the students that creation of a competitive advantage is not a one-time process. Today’s competitive advantage can cease to remain in future. Hence, Mehta urged the students to continuously upgrade the knowledge and skills to remain competitive and relevant.

TAPMI Professor and Dean (Academics) Dr Gururaj HKidiyoor said that around 20 business schools in the country have Finance Labs. Of that, TAPMI’s is the largest with 16 Bloomberg terminals, he added. Madhu Veeraraghavan, professor at the Institute, noted that Finance Lab brings real financial world to the classrooms. With the introduction of the lab, students will get hands-on experience in investments and portfolio management, risk management and understanding of the global financial management up to date.

Further, Prof Madhu Veeraraghavan said the institute has set up a ‘Student Investment Management Fund’ wherein the institute will select 25 students for managing the fund. Each student will be given Rs 25,000 to make investments in the market and show results.  The lab will be supported by data feed from BSE and NSE.
