Academy plans to increase student opting for Konkani

Mangaluru,May 17, 2015 :  In DK and Udupi, districts  that had opted  for Konkani as third language, all 71 students from 10 high schools scored pass marks in SSLC.   Among them, four students of two schools had written the exam in Devanagari and 66 students wrote in Kannada script.

Students of Canara High School (2), Nalanda High School (2), St Sebastian High School, Permannur (33), Mary’s High School, Kundapur (9), Madeleine High School, Mulki (3), Nithyadar Nagar English Medium High School (2), St Raymond High School, Vamanjoor (3), Pompei High School, Urwa (3), Holy Family High School Bajpe- Kannada (12) and Holy Family High School Bajpe- English (2) have cleared the examination.

Meet  :  Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Registrar Dr Devadas Pai said the academy members are visiting schools, even the government schools with education department officials to motivate teachers to introduce Konkani. Special  meetings of Konkani school managements will be convened under  the leadership of Bishops in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Karwar to convince the managements, on or after May 15.

Dr.Pai stated that the aim is to introduce Konkani at least in 100 schools and 5,000 children (from 6th to SSLC) should study the language this year. Konkani should be introduced even in English-medium schools and CBSE schools. In the first phase, we have to make it a success in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada beofre the scheme is taken to other districts.  The academy has already decided to observe 2015-16 as education year.

Konkani in PUC :  Dr Pai said all attempts are being done to introduce Konkani in PUC as well. The syllabus is ready. The response of the government is positive, but recruitment of lecturers is the question. The burden of appointing lecturers is not acceptable to government.

 Dr. Devadas Pai also said the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will felicitate students who had opted Konkani and scored good marks. The academy had provided books to around 100 schools. At present, there are 107 teachers to Konkani.  District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) would give training on methodology to Konkani teachers.
