Aadhaar issue dominates Udupi TP meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Jan 24, 2015:  The issue of people from rural areas struggling to get enrolled for Aadhaar numbers dominated the general body meeting of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat here on Friday.

Raising the issue, Veronica Carnelio, member, said that many people from rural areas were standing in long queues at the Gandhi Bhavan at Bannanje here early in the morning to get enrolled. Some came three to four times a week to get tokens for enrolment and this was causing a lot of hardship, she said.

Sunita Shetty, member, said that the plight of the senior citizens was worse. T.J. Guruprasad, Udupi Tahsildar, said that the State government had decided to set up permanent Aadhaar Centres at the Nada Kacheris in all hobli headquarters. The Aadhaar centres would start functioning in the hoblis in the district in the first week of February.

The personnel to operate the computers in these Aadhaar centres would be trained by the end of next week. This meant that the people from rural areas need not come to Udupi for Aadhaar enrollment.

Already 85 per cent of population in the district had Aadhaar cards.

Presently, the government had outsourced the work of enrolling people for Aadhaar numbers to private agencies. The officials did not have much control over them. However the new Aadhaar centres would be completely under the control of the government.

Since these centres were permanent in nature, people need not rush to get enrolled for Aadhaar.
