Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Jan 21: An ancient temple, around 4 centuries old, was uneartherd near Cherugoli in Udupi. A huge Shiva linga, discovered beneath the bushes, led to the discovery of this ancient temple, which features an unusual architectural design. The remains of the gopuram and teertha mantap have been unearthed.

This is the family deity of the Chandulakas. Owing to a misunderstanding among the members of the family, they abandoned their original place of residence and installed the linga of Shri Somanatha near Cherugoli.

The diety was worshipped for nearly 30 years. The tiles might have been laid on the teertha mantap in 1868.
