Dec 20, 2017: Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse a crowd when members of two communities gathered in front of Sampya Police Station near Puttur over a complaint of a minor girl being ‘teased’.

Police said that Yusuf allegedly ‘teased’ a girl who later informed her mother. Upon learning of the episode, members of a Hindu organisation handed over Yusuf to the police. Alleging that Yusuf had been assaulted, the police then arrested a man.

As the news began to spread, a large number of people gathered near the police station. Members of Hindu organisations demanded that police book Yusuf under POCSO Act while other community members demanded registering a complaint against those who had assaulted Yusuf, which led to tension. To disperse the crowd, the police resorted to lathicharge. Police also intensified security in the region. Police have now filed three separate cases in connection with the incident.

Police arrested Yusuf for teasing the girl and Harishchandra for assaulting Yusuf. For unlawful assembly in front of the police station, police arrested 14 persons and later released them.

Police said Yusuf, a lorry driver, befriended a minor girl on Dec 18,  Monday and asked for her mobile number.

The girl in turn informed her mother. But on questioning, Yusuf reportedly said that he did not ask for her contact number.

Meanwhile, Hindu Jagarana Vedike district secretary Ajith Rai Hosamane and Puttanna of Marike in Aryapu of Puttur alleged police harassment and got  admitted to a private hospital in Puttur. The duo said that, “We have not raised slogans nor engaged in any hooliganism. The police assaulted us over a personal grudge,” they said.

SP clarifies  :  Reacting to the incident, SP C H Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that, “Since there was unlawful assembly of people, force was used to disperse the crowd under CrPC 129. Ajith Rai Hosamane was a part of the unlawful assembly and he sustained injuries. Moreover, he was taken into custody from the spot. If he is admitted to a hospital, then relevant documents will help in making the case against him foolproof. These details will be collected.”
