July 25, 2017: It has come to light that St Aloysius College Social Work Department, St Agnes College Psychology Department, Daijiworld Weekly and Roshni Nilaya Counseling Centre will set up ’Mangaluru Suicide Prevention Lifeline,’ in order to prevent suicides.

According to a survey, in Mangaluru, 4.5 % of 1,016 students between the age-group 14 and 25 have attempted to kill themselves and 6.79% have thought of committing suicide, for not being able to get good marks in SSLC and PUC examinations. This is due to parental pressure, according to the survey. Experts in the field of psychology, psychiatry, law and social work have come together to provide training to the volunteers for the noble cause. The team comprises Dr Santhosh Prabhu, Dr Rohan Mendonca, Dr Carolene D’Souza, Dr Ramila Shekhar, Dr Lavina Lobo, Dr Shrinivas Bhat, Sr Mary Evlin, Merlin Martis, Rosa Mathew Ramapuram, Dr Audry Pinto, Roshan Monteiro and Dr Lavina Norohna.

The 24x7 helpline will respond to the problems of those who are depressed and 50 volunteers will be trained to work for the lifeline.

The interested volunteers may contact Roshan Monteiro at 8073852986 or e-mail ssssusheglifeline@gmail.com
