’Get woes redressed without advocates’

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Dec 25 2014: Dakshina Kannada District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum President Asha Shetty said that with a small amount of fee and without the need to engage an advocate, the consumer can get his/her grievances redressed at the consumer court.

Speaking at National Consumer Day organised by the district administration, Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and District Consumer Federation here on Wednesday, she said that the Forum disposes the case within 90 days.

There was no delay in obtaining justice from consumer courts.

She said “people in Dakshina Kannada district are aware of their rights through the active participation of consumer clubs in schools and colleges. The Forum on an average receives 60 to 70 complaints in a month. The neighbouring Udupi district has received hardly 120 cmplaints in the last three to four years,” she added.

She said that the consumer had the right to know information about the product, and also get compensation if the product was of inferior quality or did not perform as promised.

Stating that documents are essential in consumer court, she advised people to compulsorily obtain receipts for whatever they purchase. Traders usually discourage people from demanding receipt.  Without receipts, justice can not be provided, she added.

As a consumer, all of us should have knowledge on consumer rights. Schools and colleges should have books related to Consumer Protection Act. The Act aims at improving the quality of living in the society.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that many a time consumers are taken for a ride by the traders.

In government set up, governent is the service provider and citizens are consumers. People complain on loopholes in the system.

To address the loopholes, the government had introduced Right to Information Act and Sakaala. The Self-Helps Groups and NGOs should create awareness on consumer rights.
