‘Worm hole is just a guess’

Mangaluru, Jan 9, 2015: The former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) U.R. Rao said here on Thursday that “we really don’t know whether worm holes exist in space. As of now it is a conjecture.”

A worm hole is said to be a theoretical passage through space-time that could create shortcuts for long journeys across the universe.

Replying to questions from students of various schools and colleges at an interactive session at The Yenepoya School here, Mr. Rao said that as nothing had been proved about worm holes, it was nothing but a guess.

He asked students to be sure and clear what they wanted to pursue in life. “Find out your true interest. They only you can leave your footprint in a profession,” he said.

The 82-year-old scientist, who was born at Ermal in Udupi district, said young people should have dreams and face challenges to come up in life. To a question, he said currently domestic satellite launching vehicles could lift satellites weighing up to 2.5 tonnes. Indian satellites weighing above 2.5 tonnes were being launched through European vehicles, he said.

To a question on how the Mars mission had helped tax payers of the country, he countered, “How has the birth of a child helped the country?” He said that in scientific research the country could not remain in cradle. It has to look beyond the earth keeping future developments and demands for resources in mind.
