Mangalore, Oct 25, 2014:  Savayava Krishika Grahaka Balaga  President Addoor Krishna Rao stated, it will organise ‘Swavalambi santhe’ in City on October 26.  He said  the santhe will provide a platform for the organic farmers to sell their produce directly without the intervention of middlemen. It will also provide a space for the self-employed women and men to showcase their products.

The fair will be inaugurated by DK DC A B Ibrahim, in front of Sahitya Kendra in PM Rao Road. Mayor Mahabala Marla and Corporation Bank GM Lakhminath Reddy and Corporator Poornima will be the chief guests.

“Savayava Santhe which was formed recently in Mangalore aims at promoting organic produce. The purpose of the event is to inculcate awareness among people about the health benefits of consuming organic products and promoting organic farming. It is an effort to bring organic farmers and consumers of organic produces for better and direct interaction. Many a time farmers do not get suitable produce for the vegetables they grow. Normally for coconut, growers get Rs 12 to Rs 15 in the market. When they sell directly at Swavalambi santhe, they can fetch Rs 17 to 22.” To a query on how Balaga will certify the organic produce, he said “after the farmers register their names to take part in the fair, we visit their farm and also review their farming practices to ensure that they do not use chemical fertilisers. We also interact with the labourers.” On October 26, a Swavalambi Jyothi will be taken out from Sharavu Mahaganapathy temple to the venue. Arivu Yuva Samvada will create awareness on organic produce through swavalambi songs. Along with organically grown vegetables, pickles, chutney and sambar powders, artifacts and other decorative items will be sold at the venue.

The Balaga will organise similar fair at ‘Manju prasada’ at Mallika extension in Kadri on November 2, Vedam Ayu Ayurveda hospital premises in Pandeshwar on December 12, ‘Swamy Kripa,’ at Kadri Kambala on January 4, Sharada Vidyalaya on February 8, ‘Mane Avarana’ Datta Nagara, Shaktinagara on March 8, ‘Taripadi’ Bejai on April 19, Srikrishna Bhajana Mandira at Bejai on May 17 and Balambhatta hall on June 21. This effort is hoped to improve the lot of small farmers in due course.
