Manipal, Nov 21, 2015 : According to a media release issued by the university, poem writing competition, mothers caring for the newborn, radio telecast on newborn care, awareness programme on care of mother and child and a workshop on humanised neonatal care were some of the events held during the week.  Department of OBG Nursing and Child Health Nursing, Manipal University, chalked out elaborate plans for “Newborn Week” with the theme, “Indian Neonatal Action Plan,” which began here from November 14.

A poem competition on the topic “Newborn” in English, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam and there were 48 participants in all.

The winners in the students’ category in this competition were Christeena John from Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Priya from Manipal School of Nursing (MSON), Shreya Singh from Manipal College of Dental Sciences, and Evlin Roy from Department of Clinical Psychology.

In observation of mothers caring for the newborn, mothers were observed and evaluated for the care provided to their neonates for a week from November 9.

Observation was done in postnatal wards of Kasturba Hospital here. Sreelatha admitted in postnatal ward, mother of a baby girl residing at Kundapur, was selected as “Best Mother” based on the assessment.

A role play on “Newborn Care” by Postgraduates students of MCON was broadcasted by a local FM radio station on November 14 and 18.

An awareness programme on care of mother and child was held in collaboration with Rotary Club of Shankarpura.

About 60 mothers of under five children, anganwadi and play school teachers, took part in the sessions on topics such as “Essential Newborn Care,” “Prevention of communicable disease in children and care of Child during illness,” “Importance of balanced diet for women and children,” and “Do’s and don’ts regarding care of children.”

Yashoda Sathish, Assistant Professor, Department of Child Health, Nursing and Maria Pais, Assistant Professor, Department of OBG Nursing, conducted the sessions.  A workshop on humanized neonatal care was held on November 17. As many as 39 participants from different institutions were present at the workshop. Sessions were also held on topics such as “Neuro Motor assessment and management,” “Family centered care,” “Healing environment” and “Comprehensive high risk care of newborn.”
