Mangaluru, Mar 12, 2018: Here is a dictionary that could make you sound dexterous by helping you with synonyms and antonyms of any Konkani concept, throwing in a plethora of idioms and sayings that you utter, to show off your proficiency. It provides flexibility in the use of Konkani language.

This dictionary, ‘Konkani Thesar,’ a Konkani Thesaurus, a first-of-its-kind in Konkani, contains thousands of synonyms and antonyms for about 5,000 Konkani words. This is the third dictionary by Rev Prashant Madtha S J, former principal of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru is presenting.

His first dictionary was, ‘Ten Thousand Idioms of Konkani.’ The second one was ‘Padanidhi’, a massive volume of 800 pages, containing synonyms and antonyms of Kannada. The latest one, ‘Konkani Thesar’, has about 600 pages.

Perhaps Rev  Prashant is the only person to edit two thesaurus in two languages. In 2008, his massive volume of Kannada synonyms and antonyms, ‘Padanidhi’, also a first-of-its-kind in Kannada, was published, bringing him laurels.

One English weekly in 2008, acclaimed him as one of the 50 pioneers of change in India, and also named him the ‘Wordsmith’, ‘Roget of Kannada’ (of ‘Roget’s Thesaurus’ fame) and the second Rev Ferdinand Kittel of Kannada.

The method followed in Konkani Thesaurus, like Roget’s Thesaurus in English, is not in alphabetical order but conceptually arranged.

Incidentally, Fr Prashant is a columnist and a prolific writer in three languages with five books in Kannada, four books in Konkani, one in English (On Eagle’s Wings), recounting the 125-year-old history of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. He had introduced Konkani as a subject in the college, when he was the principal. In fact, St Aloysius was the first and the only institution in Karnataka which taught Konkani where exams were conducted by the Mangalore University.

Book release  :   The ‘Konkani Thesar,’ the dictionary of Konkani Synonyms and antonyms, will be released by St Joseph’s Institutions (Bengaluru) Rector Rev Fr Antony Joseph at Rasquinha Hall at St Aloysius College in Mangaluru at 4.30 pm on March 18.

Karnataka Jesuit Province Provincial Rev Fr Stany D’Souza and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes will be the guests.
