ZP notice to Govt Dr for using phone indiscriminately

Mangaluru, Nov 29 2017: The zilla panchayat Nov 28, Tuesday served a show-cause notice to a doctor at the government hospital in Belthangady for allegedly speaking on the phone and not attending to a patient.  It came down heavily on him, calling it an ’inhumane act’.

The patient was a 2nd PU student who sustained a sprain fracture on her hand after a fall.  The girl’s mother alleged that Dr Shashank did not provide treatment to the patient who had travelled several kilometres to reach the hospital. Due to his apathy, the patient and her mother were forced to travel from Belthangady to the Puttur government hospital for treatment. The issue was raised during the water and sanitation meeting on Nov 28, Tuesday. Elected ZP representatives demanded the termination of the doctor’s services.

The girl’s mother, who rolls beedis for a livelihood, said that she came from a poor family and her daughter, a 2nd PU student at Gerukatte, injured her hand after she fell when a dog chased her when she was going to college. The next morning, we rushed to hospital for treatment, due to severe pain. The crowded hospital had along ques at 10.30am.


The doctor, instead of attending to them, was busy talking on the phone for nearly long. with no sign of him ending the call. After some time, he attended to the girl did not ask for an x-ray to check for a fracture, he prescribed some pain-killers and asked her to leave. The lady told the other staff of the apathy.  Later, she went to Puttur Government Hospital, an hour from Belthangady for treatment.

She added that an x-ray revealed a serious injury, but no fracture. "I literally begged him to refer her for an x-ray ,but the doctor paid no heed," she said.
