Udupi, Apr 12, 2015: Compassionately aiming to empower disabled persons, zilla panchayat chief executive officer M Kanagavalli has decided to provide them with driving license and self-employment opportunities. Meeting held at Bala Bhavan formulated an ad-hoc policy framework.
About 50 disabled persons, whom doctors have deemed fit to drive vehicles, were present. The CEO, after a discussion, said the policy will help more people with disabilities and bring them to the mainstream.
CEO Kanagavalli said 15 vehicles for the disabled will be provided by department for Welfare of Disabled & Senior Citizens, 25 will be provided by zilla panchayat, and five will be provided through 3% funds set aside for the disabled. The MPs and MLAs too are expected to assist through their respective area development funds. To ensure a smooth initiative, CEO Kanagavalli set up a coordination venture involving the officer from department of Welfare of Disabled & Senior Citizens and the regional transport officer (RTO).
The CEO said that other initiatives, including requests for training in mobile phone repair, photography, setting up of petty shops, housing schemes, timely disbursal of monthly pension, and training in arts, are also being considered for the future development.
