Yeoman’s service by Coast Guard officer saved 2 lives

Mangaluru, Oct 21 2017: Prompt actions of an Indian Coast Guard officer helped in saving two unconscious persons laying on roadside due to electric shock at the Airport Road on 18th October 2017 morning around 10 AM.

Asst Comdt Abhishek Wadhwa, belonging to 75 ACV Squadron, which is commanded by Commandant Gulwinder Singh, was heading towards Kunjathbail and passing through the Airport Road. The officer suddenly found two persons laying on roadside in unconscious state. Immediately, he stopped and enquired the reason from the two bystanders. They briefed that the labourers had suffered electric shock. Without wasting any moment, the officer commenced cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by adhering to all the safety precautions. The efforts revived one person. However, the other person was still unconscious.

Without wasting any moment, the officer decided to shift the unconscious person to nearest hospital. Meanwhile, some people gathered around and stopped an autorickshaw. The unconscious person along with the revived person accompanied by another volunteer were sent to AJ Hospital, Mangalore. The unconscious person was treated at Emergency Ward and the doctors were successful in reviving him. He was discharged on 20 October 2017 and is under medication.

The two labourers were subsequently identified as Vengappa, 47 years old and his nephew, Siddanna, 21 years old, both belonging to Neerlekeri village, Badami Taluk. Siddana is a Diploma student of Government Polytechnic College, Bantwal and also undertakes part time work. Shri Vengappa is presently staying at Thokkottu, near Ullal.

Deputy Inspector General, SS Dasila, TM, the Commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, expressed his satisfaction on the act of rescue and stated, “Saving of every life is important. Generally, Indian Coast Guard is involved in saving lives at sea. This act of saving is equally significant and is as per our motto - Vyam Rakshamah, i.e., We Protect. We shall continue to serve the people of Karnataka”.
