15 October 2009

Star Garage, a workshop situated at Shivanagar sixth cross in Pandeshwar, was damaged and an employee was seriously injured when a cylinder of liquid petroleum gas that was leaking caught fire at 10 a.m. on October 14, Wednesday.

The injured has been identified as 18-year-old Asif, who is currently being treated in a hospital in Mangalore for severe burns. Three cars, which had been given to the garage for repairs and servicing, also caught fire and were burnt down. The fire brigade rushed to the spot and doused the flames.

Samad Vajid Hassan is the owner of Star Garage. One of the residents of Shivanagar said that Mr. Hassan had no license to run the garage and that the local people had objected when it was inaugurated. However, owing to the negligence of the Mangalore City Corporation, the workshop was permitted to function in Shivanagar.
