Nearly 500 workers, including 326 permanent workers, were protesting since last 3 days,  after the unit declared a lockout and suspended its operations. The company had said that the unruly action of certain workers had hindered the smooth operation of the unit and severely impacted production compelling it to suspend operations despite several attempts at resolving the matter peacefully.

Speaking to presspersons at the District Offices Complex,  Udupi DC  Priyanka Mary Francis said that during the talks at Nadsal, both sides explained their problems in a peaceful atmosphere.

The company officers pointed out at the financial losses due to reduction in production at the unit. They also said that the fight among workers was affecting the production. The representatives of the workers explained their problems in the unit. The representatives promised that they would work together in the unit and that the unit should be reopened soon, she said.

The company officers said that they could not take decisions on their own and would inform the board and that they would convey the board’s decision next week.

“We also met the workers sitting outside the SEZ and told them about the decisions taken at the meeting. Later, the protesting workers left the venue,” she said.

To a query, DC  Francis said that company officials appeared to be positive on the reopening of the unit. Lockout did not mean closure.

From what the officials said, it appeared that they wanted to send a message to the workers, she said.

Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, and the Assistant Development Commissioner from Kochi SEZ also participated in the meeting.
