Mulki, Dec 31, 2017:  A 58 year old woman who was alone in her house at Aikala Berike in Mulki police station limits has been hacked to death by robbers who decamped with  jewellery from the house during broad daylight on December 30, Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Vasanthi Shetty, wife of  Sudhama Shetty, a farmer and LIC agent. The incident occurred when  Sudhama Shetty  had been to the LIC office on account of some work.

The assailants  had  barged into the house being very sure that Vasanthi was alone. It is believed that Vasanthi  took a knife in her hands to drive out the assailants who however overpowered her and  killed her by slitting her throat.  Even while lying in a pool of blood, Vasanthi had  telephoned her husband who on hearing her feeble voice sensed something was wrong and had immediately telephoned his friend  Prakash Shetty and asked him to rush  home. But, before Prakash and others rushed to the house, Vasanthi  had breathed her last.

The assailants had ransacked the cupboard.  Even the  mangalasutra and bangles which Vasanthi  was wearing has been robbed., Neighbours say they had seen some strangers speaking to  Vasanthi in the afternoon.

One suspicion is that a property dispute might have led to the murder. It is said four months ago a few people had put up  huts in Sudhama Shetty’s land stating  they had their Varga land there. Though Sudhama Shetty had settled the issue after surveying the land, the same persons had once again begun residing there following which  he had lodged a police complaint.

Finger print experts have been summoned to the spot and investigations are in progress,
