Week old baby undergoes complex heart surgery at Manipal Hospital.

Manipal: June 19, 2015: Manipal Hospital Bengaluru, part of Manipal Health Enterprises sucessfully operated complex heart surgery on a week-old baby.

Speaking to the media personals Dr. Devananda N S (who operated on the Infant) said Baby Manish was born to a young couple after years of waiting, but their happiness lasted only for 3 weeks as the baby started facing problems in breathing and the parents were told to consult Dr. Leslie Lewis. 

An examination at KMC revealed that the baby had major heart problem apart from Infection and surgery.

The Baby was born with a defect called ’ Transposition of great arteries’. It is serious but rare heart defect, in which two main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. It changes the way blood circulates through the body leaving a shortage of oxygen in blood flowing from the heat to the rest of the body.

Manish was just 3 week old and weighing 1.8 kg.

The doctors found that the child was also suffering from a rare condition of a single coronary artery which put the child at a greater risk for arterial switch operation. The baby underwent baby underwent arterial switch operation where the major arteries are brought to right positions along with the transfer of the single coronary artery.

After 2 week post-operation the condition of the child gradually improved and was discharged. Now the child is normal and gaining weight. The surgery was supported with the financial assistance by Manipal Hospital.

Congenial Heart Disease is a problem with the structure of the heart at the time of birth and affects one out of 100 live births.
