We’ll petition Election Commission on removal of slogans from vehicles, says Suresh Kumar

Mangaluru, Apr 10, 2019: The Bharatiya Janata Party will question before the Election Commission of India the action taken by the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administrations to remove slogans “Mai Bhi Chowkidar” and others from vehicles by terming them as violation of model code of conduct, said State BJP spokesperson and former Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar here on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters after his interaction session with advocates organised by the BJP Legal Cell here, Mr. Kumar wondered how the action of sporting slogans can be termed as violation of model code of conduct.

“This is a State issue. We will shortly approach the State Election Commission and also the ECI,” Mr. Kumar said.

Earlier, in his interaction, Mr. Kumar said that “Mai Bhi Chowkidar” and others symbolised a movement to inspire people from different professions to work for the betterment of the county. “The lawyers are chowkidars; the doctors are chowkidars.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants not just the uniformed security guards but all professionals to join hands together in the development of the nation, he said.

Allying fears expressed by the Opposition that the BJP will bring changes to the Constitution, Mr. Kumar said that the BJP was not thinking of bringing any changes to the Constitution.

“Lawyers know that it is not easy to bring about changes as one would want,” he said and reminded the statement of Mr. Modi that he considered the Constitution as a sacred text. He accused the Congress of bringing a host of amendments to the Constitution, including the one in 1986 following the Supreme Court judgment in the Shah Bano case.

Rebuking Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s statement on Mr. Modi that the latter used wax to look bright, Mr. Kumar told reporters that Mr. Kumaraswamy should stop spreading such canards.

“He is behaving just like a father [the Chief Minister’s son is the Janata Dal (S) candidate in Mandya] would and not as a Chief Minister,” he said.
