Water scarcity issues discussed at ZP meeting

Mangalore, Feb 27: The members of the DK Zilla Panchayat (ZP) discussed the burning issue of scarcity of drinking water in several Gram Panchayats (GPs) during the first meeting of newly elected ZP members on Saturday.

The ZP members said that the people suffer from this problem even before summer begins and said that the people will protest in front of ZP members’ houses if nothing is done to solve this problem.

MLA Ramanath Rai said that projects related to the multi village scheme have been launched only in Kinnigoli GP and not in any other GP.

ZP CEO P. Shivashankar said that the currently available water can satisfy the requirements of 37 lakh people, adding that there are 1,200 piped water supply lines, 983 mini water supply schemes, and 5,700 hand pumps in DK. Stating that leaks have affected supply of water to several areas, Mr. Shivashankar said that a survey is being conducted to identify various leaks, after which the leaks will be plugged.

He also said that a state-level survey of drinking water resources has been launched.

The problems faced by anganwadi workers were also discussed.
