Visually challenged radio listeners gain vision through the mind

Mangaluru, Oct 11, 2019: Community Radio Sarang organised a special programme to celebrate the national award it had won recently.Vision blindness is only in the eyes, the mind has no blindness, was the refrain chanted by visually challenged radio listeners at a function in the city.

The programme ‘Antar Belaku’ highlighted the life of visually challenged listeners of Radio Sarang.Many who had been a part of the radio programmes and also listeners turned up for the programme organised at the St Aloysius College auditorium.

One ardent blind listener of Sarang, stressed, “I am blind only in my eyes, but I see through my inner eyes, my mind is not blind. I have learnt by listening to Radio Sarang that we must not compare ourselves with those who are above us. We must look at those who are worse than us and be happy that we are much better.”

Another visually challenged listener, who came down from Mudigere to attend the programme, said that he wanted to meet other people like him.

“I am delighted to meet my friends, whom I had heard on radio,” he smiled.

Senior Yakshagana artiste and retired teacher Bhaskara Rai Kukkuvalli pointed out the huge difference between seeing and perceiving.

“Most of us with good eyesight only see. You require inner eyes to perceive people and happenings. People who are visually less fortunate develop a strong inner eye through which they can perceive with deep understanding much better than those who can see,” he added.

Rector of St Aloysius Institutions Fr Dionysius Vaz said that, most of the time, those who have eyes see only negative things around them. “People like these visually challenged radio listeners cannot see anything negative in life. They see only goodness in others, which they see from within. We must learn such a trait from them,” he advised.

All visually challenged listeners of Radio Sarang were honoured at the programme.
