Violation of law, liquor cases booked in Dakshina Kannada : DC

Mangaluru, Apr 09, 2019: DK District Election Officer and DK DC Sasikanth Senthil said 84,181.02 litres of liquor, worth Rs 93.92 lakh has been seized in the district since the announcement of the Lok Sabha election.

A total of 461 Excise Law violation cases have been registered and three expenditure-related FIRs have been registered, DC Senthil told media here on April 8,  Monday.

In addition, three two-wheelers, three lorries, 1,907 pamphlets, three cars, one truck and one tanker have been seized in connection with the violation of model code of conduct. The value of the seized properties is
Rs 1.07 crore, he added.

Though Rs 28 lakh in cash was seized in the district, it was handed over to the concerned after verifying the documents pertaining to the transportation of the cash, the DC said.

Already, 11,631 licenced gun owners have deposited their firearms at the respective police stations. Relaxation has been given to 86 licenced gun owners, he said.

Senthil said the district-level media certification and monitoring committee (MCMC) has received 10 complaints. It has verified issues in 15 pamphlets, he added.

The deputy commissioner said that the district has 1,861 polling booths. A total of 2,236 control units, 2,236 ballot units and 2,495 VVPATs have been received in the district. Even the second randomisation of EVMs has bee completed in the presence of the candidates. The work on the commissioning of the EVMs with symbol loading will be held in the presence of BEL technical staff and candidates on April 10 at 9.30 am at SDM PU College, Ujire; Dhavala College, Moodbidri; Rosario Educational Institutions, Pandeshwara; Canara High School, Urwa; Ramakrishna Educational Institutions, Mangaluru; Infant Jesus English Medium and Kannada Medium School, Modankaup and Government PU College, Sullia, he explained.

Stating that the EVM is foolproof, DC Senthil said that EVMs cannot electronically tampered with and each vote is recorded in VVPAT.

Complaints  :   The DC said that the control room (Number 1950) has received as many as 2,598 calls in Dakshina Kannada district since the announcement of the elections. In this, 2,595 complaints have been disposed of. The control room receives at least 25 to 30 calls daily. Of 2,598 calls, around 128 were complaints related to poster, banners and violation of model code of conduct, he said.

In Dakshina Kannada, 32 complaints on violation of model code of conduct have been registered through cVigil mobile app.
‘Voter slip alone not identity proof :  DC Sasikanth Senthil reiterated that voter slip alone is not sufficient for exercising the franchise. Along with voter slip, the voters should produce either EPIC or any other 11 documents identified by the Election Commission for exercising the franchise. Other documents are passport, driving licence, identity cards with photograph issued by state and Central public sector units, saving account passbooks with photo issued by the banks and post offices, PAN card, MGNREGS job cards, smart card issued under health scheme, pension document, official identity cards of MLA/MLC and Aadhaar. The ration card has not been identified as a document to exercise franchise, he clarified.
